As a client, you want to make sure you are getting what you want at the end of the day. But how do you ensure your message is getting across and being implemented in a way you will be happy with?

Below are a few tips on how to get the best result from your team:

1. Speak their language

The best way to communicate what you are wanting is to make the time to learn a few key jargin words. This shows you not only want to achieve something together, but you are also making the effort to learn from them.

2. Respect

Tradies are people too. They are there to do a job for you, and yes you are the one that are paying them, but treat every person as you would like to be treated.

3. Listen

There are some great tradies out there that will listen to you and figure out a way to amend the construction to get you want you want without extra cost or delay. This is rare, and very dependent on your request. Once you explain what you want them to do, let them come back to you with their questions and/or concerns. Listen to what they have to say, even if it is not what you want to hear!

4. Work together

Often, what you are wanting to achieve will need some modifications to make it work. This may be amending the design slightly, changing the time schedule, or getting extra labor in to help implement your request. The tradies will be the best source of knowledge why things are done a certain way, so you can make the best decision if your request if really worth it.

A hands-on designer will be able to bridge this gap for you quickly and easily, keep a good relationship with each and every trade so when you do need a favor - they will be the 1st to willingly help you out!

Just remember; the best builds come from curating relationships with every person you come in contact with.
