Design for now; last forever?

How long should our interiors last before we update them?

This is the question our clients always want to know when they endeavor to take on a new project.

We see in the world around us everyday trends that come and go as fast as you can blink; gloss white kitchens have come and gone, as have black leather furniture. But we all know what once was, will also be present again at some stage. Do we work in fashions fast 20 year cycles or do we ride out the "fast fashion" trends for something that has potential to last as long as the renaissance buildings of Paris?

We must ask ourselves two main questions before embarking on a new design project:

1. What is the goal you are trying to achieve?

2. What lifestyle and environment are you wanting to create?

Budget is not the main concern. Neither is location. These come secondary and with a fine balance. Your designer's first job is not to start designing, but to spend time talking to you, working out why you are embarking on a new project. Once we understand this, then we can create something to suit your needs.

Trends will come and go, and yes, there is a place for them, but some things should last a lifetime. Understand the quality in what you buy and the wastefulness of our current consumer mentality. Finding the right designer that can understand trends, and also see through them to get you the best of both worlds will be your key to a successful and sustainable interior for years to come.
